Homestar Energy Efficieny Rating

Homestar is a national environmental and energy efficiency rating tool.

Homestar™ is New Zealand’s environmental and energy efficiency rating for both new and existing homes. It was created in collaboration with the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC), Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ), Beacon Pathway and various experts in sustainability and building science.

Homestar™ allows homeowners and tenants to assess their home using an independent, comprehensive, scale of assessment  that places values on all the ingredients that make up a warm, healthy, sustainable and efficient homes.

Thehomestar Sinewave team includes Homestar Practitioners and Assessors who can help you through the planning, build or renovation stages of your home, working with you to achieve your Homestar rating. Not only can we provide you with a formal Certified Rating, we   can help you implement any changes recommended to improve your property’s health and energy efficiency.

As more than 65% of the 1.6 million homes in New Zealand have been identified as requiring some form of improvement, such as being more comfortable, warmer in winter, cooler in summer and healthier, using less energy and water, there is clearly great benefit in involving a Homestar assessor at an early stage.

There are three stages in the Homestar™ Rating process.

  • Stage1: Homestar™ Appraisal

This occurs when a project is at concept phase. It is primarily to confirm intention to achieve a Homestar Built Rating.

  • Stage2: Homestar™ Design Rating

    Homestar Report

A Homestar Design Rating is a full assessment of a proposed dwelling based on detailed plans, specifications and any other documentation required to fully describe the build. This Rating is only a checkpoint on the path to a Homestar Built Rating and will expire after two years.

  • Stage 3: Homestar™ Built Rating

This is the physical check of a completed dwelling by a Homestar Assessor resulting in a Built Rating.   It can be conducted on an existing property without a prior Homestar Appraisal or Homestar Design Rating. If a Homestar Design Rating has been completed, that documentation may be used to streamline the documentation process for a Homestar Built Rating.
